Bringing Real-World Inclusion into Education.

Our photography learning packs are lived experience toolkits created alongside real people navigating disabilities and substance use. Teachers can choose between primary/secondary schools with ready-to-use, age-appropriate lesson plans.
‘Belonging should be achievable for all children and young people in Scottish Schools; Really Real Resources produces documentary photography-based learning materials that tell the stories of some of our more vulnerable people in society.

To truly create an inclusive school community, children and young people need to see and hear these stories and within a safe space be encouraged to reflect and discuss on the themes. The current pack allows for meaningful engagement with mental health, substance use and relationships and equity themes and can easily be picked up and used to support the Health and Wellbeing curriculum’.

How It Works in the Classroom

Moves beyond abstract lessons by using real visual stories created by individuals living with disabilities and in recovery, encouraging students to see capability and perspective rather than stigma.

Our teacher created CfE compliant Lesson Plans are designed to minimise preparation time. Choose between primary school and secondary school Educational Learning packs. Through feedback from our pilot study, we hope to have struck the perfect balance between providing helpful guidance while allowing you the flexibility to use your experience to take the conversations in the direction you choose. This can also help you to engage those pupils who require a different approach. Students who are more visual learners really like the approach.

The next step is to spread the photographs, and only the photographs, on the desk and let the students choose which one appeals to them. You may ask them to work in pairs. That photograph becomes their photograph that they will work with over subsequent lessons. At this stage students only see the image and are encouraged to consider the story behind the photograph without background information. This captures their current thinking.

Each image has a companion document which is introduced later alongside other support materials. Students then reconsider their views based on what is actually happening in the image, based on the narratives provided and other materials provided by the charity partner.

In most Educational Learning Packs video content is included, which is shown to the class as a group. This often has the most impact as students hear those featured in the photographs talking. This brings yet another opportunity for discussion and learning.

Our Educational Learning Packs fill a documented gap in classroom materials by providing realistic, lived-experience representation of disability. It helps schools deliver on their statutory equality duties by moving away from clinical definitions of disability and focusing on real-world visibility.
